Leap of Faith
“How did you know, Dad?” Gus blurted out as he moved his queen out of harm’s way, chewing nervously on his lower lip. Brian all but ignored him though, instead staring intently at the chess-board on the low coffee table between them, calmly contemplating his next move.
“How did I know what, Gus?” Brian finally asked, looking up expectantly after carefully placing his knight.
“How could you be so sure that Justin was the one you’d be together with for the rest of your life? You know it didn’t work out all that well for mom and Mel and they even decided to get married.”
“It didn’t, huh?” Brian barked out a laugh. “The two of them made quite a mess of everything back then. It was a fuck-up of epic proportions and I’m sorry that you had to bear the fallout. But the truth is… it really doesn’t work that way, Sonny Boy, and you never know for sure. There is no guarantee and no safety net. And whatever Justin or Uncle Mikey might try to tell you, there is no manual or handbook either.”
He shook his head and, glancing in the direction of Justin’s studio, a mischievous smile began to play on his lips.
“So, why are you asking, son?” Brian smirked at Gus, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. “Are things finally getting serious with Jess?”
Gus blushed furiously but held his ground. He looked Brian straight in the eye, slyly grinning back at him.
“Seriously, Gus. The truth is… one day you’ve got to take a chance on love. You’ve got to believe in someone, a very special someone - your very special someone - strongly enough to take the risk.”
His warm hand gently clasped Gus’s shoulder.
“Believe in them strongly enough to take a leap of faith.”
