Sleep rapidly became his worst enemy.
As soon as his conscious mind shut down his subconscious would create nightmarish images of baseball bats hitting flesh and bone,
of bright blue eyes staring blindly at him then slowly drifting shut,
of dark red blood pooling around matted golden hair, then seeping into the uncaring cement floor of a parking garage.
He would lie there helpless, shivering and moaning, held captive by the tangle of sweaty sheets wrapped around his limbs, memories assaulting his defenseless mind without mercy.
He didn’t want to ever sleep again.
No more dreams for him.
Only regrets.
*****
Hospital corridors are hauntingly empty at night.
The smells and sounds of sickness and despair soak into his skin and leave a bitter taste on his tongue.
He stands there for hours every night,
forehead pressed to the window,
staring unseeing at the fragile-looking figure on the hospital bed
helplessly trapped in a nightmarish prison of his own.
His sleep-deprived mind conjures up its own images
and his breath stutters painfully in his throat…
Bright blue eyes stare back at him before slowly drifting shut
again,
but leaving behind a shared peaceful smile on their faces.
They’ll create new dreams.
