“Brian, you got a call from your doctor’s office. It’s time for your next check-up. They said they called Kinnetik because you wouldn’t return their calls.”

Brian glared at Cynthia. “That’s none of your fucking business.”

“You know it’s necessary. And it won’t go away if you ignore it.”

“What, are you my mother now?”

Cynthia lightly touched his arm and smiled.

“You know there are people who care about you, right? Who want you around for a long time… haven’t we always watched out for each other?”

Brian offered the barest nod.

“Your appointment is Friday at 8 am.”
